Specific Tasks
- Technical support to the assessment and verification of the MetOp-SG instruments end-to-end performances.
- Monitoring of the development of Ground Processor Prototype (GPP), Performance Assessment Tools (PAT and GLANCE) and Instrument Data Simulator (IDS) of the MetOp-SG instruments, including payload common parts.
- Review of the GPP and IDS Input/Output compliance with respect to specifications.
- Support to EUMETSAT documentation review (L1b products specifications, L1b Algorithms Theoretical Baseline Documentation, ATBD, calibration/validation plans).
- Review of MetOp-SG instruments Characterisation, Calibration and In-Orbit Verification Plans.
- Improvement and maintenance of instrument performance and data processing tools (models, performances, budgets).
- Coordinate with the System Support Division of the Earth Observation Project Department the installation of GPPs on shared resources and guarantee their operability.
- Prepare a MetOp-SG infrastructure to automatise the executions of instrument GPPs during Satellite In Orbit Verification (SIOV).
- Processing instrument on-ground and in-orbit level-0 data up to level 1B products and provide In Orbit Verification report to demonstrate instrument performances are met in orbit.
- Participation to Project reviews (FAR, SIOVR).
- Assessment of non-compliances and RFDs/RFWs related to instrument performances.
- Support to Instrument Calibration campaigns.
In the execution of his tasks, the Processing Engineer will work closely with each of the Principal Instrument Engineers responsible for the relevant instruments.
Specific qualification requirements
- Master’s degree in Earth Observation instruments performance and data processing.
- Good understanding of remote sensing measurement concept, including background in modelling of the observation techniques, instruments calibration, end-to-end performance estimation, level1b processing and instrument characterisation.
- Solid understanding of instrument scientific simulators, scientific data processing and data quality monitoring.
- Experience with one or more of the instruments of the MetOp-SG suite (microwave radiometers, scatterometer, radio occultation, optical imaging radiometer) data processing, instrument modelling and experience in instrument development is an asset.
- Good familiarity with data analysis software such as Excel, Matlab and Python.
- Knowledge of programming languages (e.g. C/C++) is an asset.
- Proficient in the English Language (Spoken and Written).
Legal and Security Requirements
- All applicants must be legally allowed to work in The Netherlands
- Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA.
- Prior to issuing a letter of employment the applicant shall provide to Aurora a recent official document declaring that they are of good conduct from the country where currently resident.
Location
The work will be performed at the European Space Technology and Research Centre (ESTEC) at Noordwijk, The Netherlands.
Contract
- The selected candidate will receive good remuneration.
- Will be registered for both social security and tax in the Netherlands.
- The standard working hours are 40 per week. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 30 annual days holiday.

- Aurora contributes 15,4% of pensionable salary to a company pension scheme and employees can optionally make additional contributions.
