Overview

The contractor will provide support to Earth Observation Projects (CHIME and LSTM) in the domain of End-to-end (E2E) Mission Performance covering both mainly software aspects. The E2E performance chain comprises several components: scene generator, instrument simulator, instrument data processor(s).

He/she will work integrated in the relevant Project Teams and will report to the System Manager (or equivalent role within the Project).The support will address :

Specific Tasks

  • Operate an up to date copy of E2E software components in ESTEC to perform specific runs in order to check/repeat verification and validation procedures provided by industries, and ensure proper methods are implemented.
  • Extend the test plan of industry to make sensitivity analysis or execute specific test requested by Projects in order to monitor instrument performance and to analyse impacts on the mission performance resulting from deviations during the development programme.
  • Support reviews of the E2E software components and participate to project meetings.
  • Supporting Test Data production and verification.
  • Supporting the analysis of the data collected during on-ground and in-orbit calibration and characterisation campaigns;
  • Developing any needed software tool to support all the mentioned activities.
  • Providing necessary inputs for the relevant internal and external meetings.
  • Detecting SW anomalies to be reported to SW developer for analysis.
  • Ensuring that the E2E Mission Performance Simulator chain and its components and algorithms meet the required functionality and performance, taking into account system, instrument, geophysical model and calibration/validation facility aspects.

In performing the above duties the Contractor will closely work with the other staff of the programme.

Specific Qualification requirements

  • University (Master) degree in Physics or Engineering or equivalent qualification. A (Master) degree in Computer Science could be accepted if relevant experience with Earth Observation algorithms is demonstrated.
  • A first-hand experience and proficiency in the development of numerical modelling software preferably using compiled languages (C/C++/Java), development environments and using the Unix operating system.
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing environment such as GPU and cloud processing.
  • Good familiarity with computer programs such as Matlab, Python or IDL. Knowledge of specific tools such as image analysis tools is considered a plus.
  • Background knowledge of the problematics involved in Earth Observation modelling.
  • A system viewpoint with the ability and willingness to assess the impact that each element brings to the overall mission performance.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team within the boundaries of assigned tasks and a stringent schedule.
  • Proficiency in English language (spoken and written) is essential.

Legal and Security Requirements

  • All applicants must be legally allowed to work in The Netherlands.
  • Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA.
  • Prior to issuing a letter of employment the applicant shall provide to Aurora a recent official document declaring that they are of good conduct from the country where currently resident.

Location

The work will be performed at the European Space Technology and Research Centre (ESTEC) at Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

Contract

  • The selected candidate will receive good remuneration  in line with ESA Job Class.
  • Will be registered for both social security and tax in the Netherlands.
  • The standard working hours are 40 per week. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 30 annual days holiday.
